Introducing BCBMAN - Building Capacity for Biodiversity Monitoring
and Assessment in Nepal
The objective of the project was to build the capacity of protected
area managers in Nepal to incorporate biodiversity information in
their decision-making processes at work.
Training was conducted to establish methods for the assessment
and monitoring of biodiversity and “Guidelines for Biodiversity
Assessment and Monitoring in Protected Areas” have been produced.
The Guidelines have been tested and illustrated with experience
from the Annapurna
Conservation Area (ACA), which is of exceptional importance
for biodiversity and the largest protected area in the country.
The ACA is managed by the King
Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation (KMTNC), which has pioneered
the involvement of local communities in protected area management.
The project was implemented by UNEP-WCMC and KMTNC and funded by
the U.K. Government's
Darwin Initiative, which is a small grants programme to promote
biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of resources in less
developed countries. The project ran from 2002 to March 2005.
